 August Contribution 1940


                                             On August 8, 1940, Vice Roy Lord Lilin Tso assured the Indians of some concessions. This is called the August offering. The purpose of the August Offer was to get the support and cooperation of Indians in the Second World War.

August Offer Highlights :-

1. Creation of a responsible government on the Dominion model after the war.

2. To recognize the right of Indians to make their own constitution.

3. Formation of the Convention Drafting Committee after the Second World War.

4. Giving full credit to minority opinion. By doing so, the status of minorities will also be protected.

5. Expand the Viceroy's Executive Council, giving greater representation to Indians.

6. Granting Dominion Status to Bharat

                                          At the beginning of World War II, the British government faced some problems. Japan demonstrated its military power and threatened the British Empire. Britain was fighting against Germany in Europe. In such a difficult situation, Britain wanted to maintain a friendly position with India .The British government, led by Winston Churchill, sent a delegation to India under Sir Stafford Cripps, a member of the British Cabinet, on March 22, 1942 to suggest a solution to India's political problems. The delegation proposed some suggestions before the Indian leaders. These suggestions are called Cripps suggestions.



Cripps proposal Highlights

1. Establishment of a Dominion State of India

2. Establishment of an elected assembly to frame a new constitution for India immediately after the end of the Second World War

3. The responsibility of framing the new constitution was given entirely to Indians.

4. To allow Indian states to participate in the Constituent Assembly.

5. Members of the Legislative Assemblies of the British Territories to the Constituent Assembly shall be elected on the basis of their population.

6. To send representatives of domestic states to the Constituent Assembly elected on the basis of their population.

7. It is the right of any province of British India to accept or reject the new constitution. The British Government allowed any province of British India which did not agree to the new constitution to continue in its existing constitutional state.

8. The responsibility and direction of the defense of India shall be controlled by the British Sovereign Government until a new constitution is formed.

                                         


  The Cripps proposals were to be implemented after the war ended. So Gandhi ji called this proposal as Post Dated Cheque. Also both the Congress and the Muslim League rejected the Cripps proposal
