•Secondary precious metal.
Uses of Silver:
• Silver is a rare metal used in making coins. Used in the manufacture of cosmetics. Used in coating the back of mirrors.
• In the medical field, silver is used as foils, and as a sterilant. Adding copper with silver makes it harder and melts faster. It is used in idol making, utensils, lace making of clothes and chemicals.
• Silver is mixed with mercury, tin and other metals to make amalgam and is used in Vedic medicine to fill tooth pulp. Used for electroplating.
• Silver is used in batteries, solder rings. It is used in chemical reactions and medal making.
• Silver is used in electronic & electrical equipment due to its super conductivity property.
Silver compounds;
1) Silver Nitrate
Silver nitrate is used in hair dyes. Used for silvering mirrors. Silver nitrate is used in Vedic fields. When silver nitrate gets on the skin, the skin becomes black.
2) Silver Bromides
Silver bromide is used in photography because of its high sensitivity to light.
Properties of Silver;
1. Silver has a lustrous quality. Not made into wire & sheet.
2. Finely divided silver appears dark because the planes of the crystal are randomly arranged and reflect light in all directions. And only a fraction of the light reaches the viewer
3. Silver is a good conductor of electricity, but does not make it a strong conductor of electricity. Because it is a more precious metal, copper and aluminum are used as charge conductors.
